Chastened

Last night I saw an Oscar winning film performance that will never win the Oscar, whose I hear you ask.

Well it wasn't the latest dive from the prima donnas on the football pitch, or the guy who "hadn't received" his railcard when he was caught out by the conductor on the train, Nor was it Archie's over dramatised roll on the floor when his brother wouldn't let him have whichever toy it was.

No this was at the cinema, by Will Smith in Seven Pound, I didn't know anything about it before we went and it's not an easy watch as it is based around his Suicide, but it is beautifully acted.

I came out with a tear in my eye, and a heavy heart as it was around this time that they found Bevan all those years ago, and it took me sailing back to so many never to be answered questions.
The irony was complete when we got home to find Frost on the telly, just discovering a guy swinging from a bridge.

Anyway let us remember the good times and what we have , there are so many things we have to be grateful for no matter how brief,

Here's another of my "poems" that I wrote a couple of years ago after watching Sport Relief to remind myself of that very fact:

Chastened

Looking deep into this time of well known tunes, and cheerful faces
I think of those who are not here,
I hold my breath for those on the brink of bright new adventures,
I see my sons and the simple joys they radiate,
And chasten myself for those days when the world seemed to mount my shoulders,
I look at those children in foreign lands,
Those bereft of hope, yet fighting on,
The children and their families who know they are about to leave us for heaven,
I look at the dreams I have,
The adventures my life gives me, the laughter to carry me through,
And chasten myself for those days when the world seemed to mount my shoulders,
I see the war torn lands,
I see the war torn peoples,
I hold the poverty as a burn upon my heart, knowing the little I have to give,
I thank my stars, my God, my life,
I hold these blessings gently in my hands for fear of breaking them,
And promise to myself that the world need not mount my wearied shoulders,
But that the world is full of joy,
Time is full of joy,
My my to why do I complain.

Onwards my friends, an egg custard and a pot of tea ( or should that be Ovaltine) awaits me,

Giving Blood

Called in tonight to give Blood for the second time, what a hugely rewarding thing to do.

Even if by necessity you are part of the herd laid up on modified camp beds whilst you watch the red stuff, (nope mine ain't blue) trundling its way into a bag much like watching fine wine make its way from the demijohn to the bottle.

A real range of people go, from the seasoned veteran who is done in a couple of minutes, to the very nervous first timer who is quite petrified of needles. Believe me it hurts more when you have your finger pricked to check your iron levels than it does to have the needle inserted.

Was fascinating watching the iron test, basically in a copper oxide liquid a drop of your blood is dropped and if it sinks your fine, thankfully mine did, Ol would have loved it as it was green, that's the copper not my blood.

Why am I doing it, well some of you may remember when Archie was born Caroline was very ill and had to have a number of blood transfusions, at one point it was leaking out just about as fast as it went in, and I promised that I would get over my fear of needles and give blood at least until I had put as much back as was given to Caroline.

I have a few more times to go yet and at the end of the day there is always a shortage, so go to the website and give it a go, you never know you may just save someones life, now wouldn't that be good!

Oh and don't worry it will take some time there are never enough beds and of course there are some very busy times but believe me you will grow some more and you will feel good about it!

Sublime

Sublime is the only way to describe the two goals Town and Oldham have shared this afternoon.
They were quite easily two of the best goals of any season, what a shame neither of my boys saw them, one due to not being able to cope with the noise levels and so huddled in my arms and one in tears due to a jumped up jobsworth of a steward towering over him because he dared to bang the seat next to him.

Other than that a fantastic advert for lower division football,

But boy do Town need a big and daft centre forward who knows where the onion bag is! Here's hoping they can afford a late Christmas present.

New Year

Ah, welcome to 2009, Happy New Year and all that.

Spent the day in the chill of the frost laden outdoors, absolutely great for the complexion you know!
A great walk round Holme Styes reservoir with a couple of rather steep and hairy descents thrown in, though I have to say the 2 1/2 year old with small stride and low centre of gravity easily coped the best with the challenge, even having time to kick the frosted leaves generously into the air.

Followed by a short stint in the garden including a small bonfire and energetic chasing of 3 egg laying ladies around said garden when the hour of roosting was upon us.

Thankfully I was aided in my cause by the late arrival of world war 3 fireworks which either someone had deja vu with or was just too inebriated to let off last evening.

No resolutions have passed my lips or made their way to paper, though I will admit to a certain number of goals for the year, including well, these will no doubt wend there way to blog later so lets leave them there for now.
